Coffee County Probate Records
Coffee County Probate Court is the local office for probate case records and a separate records channel from the Coffee County Circuit Clerk. Probate also touches records that many users do not think of as court files. Probate Terms Defined
Probate records use terms that describe who died, who asks the court to act, and who manages property or personal decisions. These definitions are practical reading aids only. They do not replace advice from the Probate Office or an attorney in a contested estate, adoption, commitment, guardianship, or conservatorship matter.

- A person who made a will before death.
- Executor
- The person named in a will to carry out the will and report to the court.
- Intestate
- Dying without a valid will, so estate distribution follows Alabama law.
- Guardianship
- A court arrangement for personal care or decision-making when a person cannot act alone.
- Conservatorship
- A court arrangement focused on property, money, or financial management for a protected person.
Estate files may include a petition, will, letters testamentary or letters of administration, bond, inventory, creditor claims, accounting, notices, and final settlement. Guardianship and conservatorship files can include sensitive medical, disability, minor, or financial details, so public access may be narrower than it is for routine recorded land instruments.
Search Coffee County Probate Court
The main online channel is the Coffee County Records Online page, which routes users to Coffee County Records Access Through Ingenuity. The county says users may search and view documents at no charge and pay only when printing. Registration is not required to view or print land records or Probate Court records. If an account is created, purchased records remain accessible online for 30 days.

- Start at the Probate Records Online page and choose the county's Ingenuity records access link.
- Use the public search path if no account is needed. Registration is not required for land records or Probate Court records.
- Check the local case prefix before searching probate files. Elba Probate Court cases begin with PC, while Enterprise Probate Court cases begin with PR.
- For recorded property records, account for the Elba Division's A/[Book] convention and A suffix after the book number.
- Contact the Probate Office if a file appears restricted, missing, sealed, or tied to a division you cannot identify.

Coffee County Probate Offices
Coffee County Probate Court has two public office locations. Probate Judge Jodee R. Thompson is listed in the Coffee County directory. The offices operate on the county administrative schedule listed by Probate: Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., closed Friday through Sunday. The Probate homepage also notes that several county offices moved to that 4/10 schedule effective September 30, 2024, while state courthouse offices such as Circuit Court, District Court, and the Circuit Clerk remain open Fridays.

Coffee County Probate Fees
Coffee County research identified a few probate-related fees that can be stated with confidence. The county Probate Records Online page gives the Ingenuity print cost. The marriage certificate page gives the recording fee and certified-copy cost. The Probate Court page links a full probate fee PDF, but the research file does not quote each estate, guardianship, or name-change fee from that PDF, so those amounts should be verified with Probate before filing.

Marriage certificate copy requests have their own Probate instructions. Coffee County Probate says a mail request for a certified marriage copy should include both parties' full names at the time of marriage, the date of marriage, the $3 certification cost for each certified copy, and a postage-paid self-addressed envelope. The request may be mailed to the Enterprise post office box or the Elba Probate address listed by the office. Estate and guardianship copies should be requested from Probate with the case name, division, file number if known, and the exact document needed.

Recording records are part of the Probate Office workload, but they are different from estate administration and guardianship case files.
What Coffee County Probate Records Show
A Coffee County estate file may show the petition to open the estate, the will if one was filed, letters testamentary or letters of administration, bond, inventory, creditor claim activity, required notices, accountings, orders, and final settlement. The exact contents depend on the type of estate and whether the matter is contested. The Probate Court page does not publish a full estate administration manual, so case-specific filing decisions should be handled through the Probate Office or counsel.
Guardianship and conservatorship records may show petitions, proposed guardian or conservator information, orders, and reports. Name change files may include the filed request and court order. Recording records can show deeds, mortgages, UCC records, judgments, LLC materials, powers of attorney, plats, notary materials, marriage certificates, and military discharges. Ingenuity may help locate public indexes and images, but certified copies and restricted matters should be confirmed with Probate.
Note: Coffee County Circuit Clerk records, District Court records, and Circuit Court records use a separate court records path through Alacourt and the Circuit Clerk.
Restricted Probate Records
Not every Probate Court category is open for general public inspection. Adoption filings are listed as a Probate Court matter, but adoption records are generally confidential. Commitments involve sensitive mental-health information and should not be treated as public search files merely because Probate handles the category. Guardianship and conservatorship records may include medical, disability, minor, or financial details that can be restricted, redacted, or available only to authorized parties.
Public access to Alabama records is also limited by statutes and court orders. Alabama's open-records law, including Code of Alabama Sections 36-12-40 and 36-12-41, supports inspection and copying of public records unless another law restricts access. The updated public-records procedure sections, 36-12-43 through 36-12-46, add structure for requests, but they do not make confidential court files public. If a Coffee County probate record is sealed, confidential, or missing from Ingenuity, the correct next step is to contact the Probate Office that handled the matter.
Military discharge records can also require care because the recording page lists military discharge among Probate recording categories. A recorded instrument index may exist, but public release can be limited when the record contains protected personal information. The same caution applies to records that include Social Security numbers, medical facts, financial account data, minor names, or victim-safety information. Ask Probate whether the office can provide a redacted public copy, a certified copy to an authorized party, or no copy without a court order.
